The altarpiece is a 15th century replica of the famous Announciation painted by Simone Martini and Lippo Memmi in 1333 for the Duomo of Siena, now conserved in the Uffizi. Although with inevitable stylistic variations, this piece constitues an homepage to the golden age of Sienese painting, an explicit example of revival dictated by both devotional and aesthetic reasons.

  • Artist Biography: Matteo di Giovanni (Borgo San Sepolcro, 1428 ca.-Siena, 1495) is a very precious Renaissance painter, whose paintings often have decorated the main altars of Sienese churches. By the lesson of Domenico di Bartolo and Lorenzo di Pietro known as Vecchietta, his art shows a deep sense of lightening, with bright colours, similar to enamels, and very refined features; his physiognomic study is definitively exemplified by his various versions of the Massacre of the Innocents.
