Archival photograph of the Art Deco buildings situated on Maharshi Karve Road along Oval Maidan. Built in 1935-38, it is a part of the first set of building that were errected on the Backbay Reclamation Scheme. They were the city's finest modern residences conceived for the first time by a new generation of Indian architects. Patronised and built by the city's business and industrial elite through the 1930's and 40's, using emerging materials such as reinforced concrete, innovative construction technologies and fresh decorative themes, these buildings transformed the look and feel of Bombay.
They are a part of 'The Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai', a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was inscribed to the list on June 30, 2018."
