During archaeological excavation in the territory of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania many stove tiles with coats of arms of noble GDL families were discovered, amongst them quite a few depicting the Radziwiłł family‘s coat of arms. A heraldic Eagle turned to the right with a renaissance shield on its chest and 3 hunting horns in it – Radziwiłł coat of arms, called Horns or Trumpets (Trąby).
Radziwiłł became a prominent family in the 15th century and remained one of the most influential ones until the ending of the history of Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the late 18th century. It was one of the richest families, ruling in 23 castles, 426 cities and smaller towns, 2032 manors and 10 053 villages. From 1547 they were the only family which had the Holy Roman Empire Dukes title.
One can guess from the initials on the stove tile that these findings could be traced back to Janusz Radziwiłł (1579–1620). He was the deputy cup-bearer of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania since 1599 and Castellan of Vilnius from 1618. The stove tiles could have been made in 1599-1618.
