The book The Great Art of Light and Shadow by the German polymath, the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680) covers many topics, the main ones being optics and astronomy. The engraved pre-title page, centred on the figures of the sun and moon, places the findings of optics in a philosophical and religious framework.
