Art Venue Acknowledging Samyan Communal Ways

(Daytime) Samyan is an old community in Bangkok, and most of its residents are Thai people of Chinese descent. This large community consisted of rows of two-story wooden shophouses with a fresh market at the center. Nowadays, Samyan has turned into an educational resource, and the original community has had to develop accordingly. For this project, the story of Samyan has inspired the artists to create an art venue in the form of mixed media sculpture to transmit the aesthetic value of art and to relate the story of the Samyan community from past to present.
The artwork consists of 2D and 3D mixed media sculptures on a wall in the shape of an infinity sign, which signifyies the continual development of Samyan’s prosperity into the future. Made of various materials such as fiberglass sheets, iron sheets, and plywood using techniques of sculpting, casting and carving into figures and shapes, the artwork relates the Samyan community’s way of life and is 3.5 m. long, 1.8 m. wide, and 2.5m. high, placed on an area measuring 5 x 8 m. The sculpture and venue design are based on universal design which allows the perception of knowing, seeing, touching, and hearing, and it includes braille for those with visual impairment and can be appreciated both day and night.
