When the Melbourne Mechanics' Institute opened in 1873 it was the first of its kind in Victoria, providing adult education classes for local working class communities. It was renamed the Melbourne Athenaeum in 1873 and continues to operate a library, theatres and shops in its original building at 188 Collins Street, Melbourne.
