Auckland, from the Verandah of Mr Reader Wood’s Cottage is one of John Kinder’s most renowned paintings. Kinder’s home was just around the corner from his friend Reader Wood’s Gothic-style house in St Stephen’s Avenue, Parnell. Wood was an Auckland architect who had designed his own cottage. The painting shows the tidal estuary framed by the verandah and a cultivated garden overlooking the harbour. This watercolour is a sophisticated depiction of domestic colonial architecture showing the growth already occurring in the young town.
