Nationalmuseum Sweden
Stockholm, Sweden

In early 1887, Kreuger returned from France, where he had been living for six years. That autumn, he and his wife Bertha moved to Varberg. This view of a rainy street is from the year after and resembles Kreuger’s paintings from his time in France. The fence in the foreground forms a diagonal, drawing the viewer’s gaze into the picture. The grey tones convey a strong sense of dampness and a chilly breeze, with wooden houses and almost-bare trees. A solitary figure struggles against the wind along the red hoarding.

  • Artist Information: Kreuger was a Swedish landscape artist. After studying in Stockholm, he went to Paris in 1881, where he was influenced by French plein air painting. He recorded urban scenes and landscapes from the surrounding countryside – often at dawn or dusk and in haze, rain or snow. In 1887 he returned to Sweden, settling in Varberg on the west coast, where from the 1890s he painted together with the artist Richard Bergh and Karl Nordström, forming the so called Varberg school. Kreuger often depicts the alley and gardens of Varberg, but above all the landscape out of town, often including grazing cattle in his paintings. In 1896 he moved to Stockholm, but he spent his summers on the island Öland off the east coast, where cows and horses grazing on the characteristic heaths and broad, flat shores became his principal subjects. Kreuger also produced monumental paintings and illustrations, as well as designs for inlaid work for furniture.
