This image shows the dyeing process of Awa shijira fabric in the Showa period. The number of the indigo pits show how extensive the indigo production was at that time. The person in the back is stirring the indigo vat. This activates the microorganisms, facilitaes the dyeing and ensures a longer lasting vat.
