Glass feeding bottles were first introduced in England around 1825. These transparent bottles became popular as they could be cleaned more effectively than the older ceramic baby bottles that hid trapped food from sight.

Some of these early baby bottles were excavated from the Coach and Horses hotel, and one from Forest Street in Bendigo. Surprisingly few baby bottles have been recovered from archaeological sites in Victoria.
