Backbone (支柱) is the representative work of Zhang Huaijiang, which depicted a wounded soldier who is reading under the candle light. The image, the spirit and artistic conception of the painting depend on each other and complement each other, telling a simple, noble and inspiring story. The proper uses of carving tools ensured harmonious rhythm of the black and white. Zhang’s serious thoughts about life were showed in the picture as well.
