BAEDEKER'S GUIDE TO EGYPT
The Count and Countess von Hallwyl had the German edition “Handbuch für Reisende”. It was also available in English and French. From the end of the 1800s, the Baedeker's guidebooks dominated the market. They had more and better maps than their competitors and a rating system that indicated important sites with an asterisk. Baedeker's guides became so widely distributed that the name started being used to indicate guides from other publishers as well.
Baedeker's guide to Lower Egypt was published in 1878 and the guide to Upper Egypt in 1892. They were later combined into a single volume that came out in 1898. In this guide, you could read about how to best scale the pyramids (with the help of two or three Bedouins, who would pull and push the climber upwards), but it also had detailed descriptions of all the popular destinations along the Nile.
