Large balauster vase in engraved and carved cinnabar lacquer. It is decorated with a geometric background pattern and enriched with chrysanthemums framed by elegant curled leaves. Figures of landscapes, gardens and pavillons are represented on the neck and on the body. The lacquer carving technique is significant for Chinese culture: the use of lacquer comes from the Neolithic Age and it has transformed over time for the creation of art objects, while carving was particularly popular between 13th and 15th century. During the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) the decorative arts developed and the art of lacquer carving evolved into the realization of large and complex objects with detailed decorations.
