From sometime in the early 18th century western ships were forbidden to pass beyond the island of Whampoa (Huangpu). The permitted foreign anchorage was on the south side of Whampoa Island where on the shore matsheds were built to store goods during the trading season. Chinese ships in the Nanyang trade could still proceed to Canton.
