Ott and Brewer hired the sculptor Isaac Broome to create a prototypically American work for the firm to display at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876.
Broome devised a monumental vase to honor America's favorite pastime, complete with three baseball player figures around its base. The factory then made copies of these sculptures, including the "Pitcher", for individual sale.
