The relief exhibited here belongs to Sironi’s late period, when his social and political illusions collapsed and his daughter Rossana took her life at the age of 18 in 1948. He continued to work despite his grief and the results bear witness to the sorrow of the time, losing the powerful constructive energy of the 1920s and ’30s but gaining overtones of heartfelt intimism.
