The Battle of Camden, South Carolina, was fought in August, 1780 during the Revolutionary War. British soldiers served under Major General Lord Cornwallis and American troops under General Horatio Gates. During the attempt to hold Camden and prevent the British from securing their hold on South Carolina, the Baron de Kalb, a German soldier who led the Delaware and Maryland regiments at this battle, fell with eleven wounds and died in Camden three days later. De Kalb was one of many Europeans who chose to side with the colonists in their struggle for independence.
