Bay Rock Lighthouse was one of the earliest lighthouses built in Queensland, completed in 1866. It was located on a small rocky islet north-west of Magnetic Island, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Townsville. In 1992 it was relocated to the Townsville Maritime Museum.
This image comes from a series of glass plate negatives created by the Department of Transport. The plates contain a historic record of Australian coastal lighthouses from about 1917. They are now held at the National Archives.
