The BBC Microcomputer was the foundation of the Computer Literacy Project during the 1980s, introduced to encourage the school children to learn how to use computers and promote computing skills. Purposefully designed with an emphasis on education, the BBC Micro became synonymous with computer literacy in schools. It is a relatively unique example of a personal computer that uses a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) processor, is hardwearing, incredibly versatile and expandable, a combination of characteristics ideal for the classroom.
