Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, France

In one of the large chambers at almost the bottom of the cave, a female cave bear skull was deliberately placed on a block of limestone. Under this skull are millimeter fragments of charcoal. Around this block were found on the ground 53 other cave bear skulls. The presence and disposition of these skulls remain under discussion. Have they been deposited by men or have they been slightly reworked by the latter from a natural distribution? This large space, today named Salle du Crâne (the Skull Chamber) could be the most important symbolic staging in Chauvet cave.
