Tillotson College in Austin, Texas, a senior college for African Americans, was chartered in 1877. Its namesake, George Jeffrey Tillotson, planned the school and selected the site. He also raised $16,000 for its establishment. It opened on January 17, 1881, with 250 students, chiefly in the lower grades. Beard Hall, seen in this photograph, was constructed in 1894.
