The original function of this Madonna from Wrocław is not known. Perhaps it resided in a side chapel of a church, or at the base of a pillar, and served as an object of individual prayer. Alternatively, some Beautiful Madonna figures are known to have been used in altarpieces, most likely due to their great popularity among the faithful. In an effort to minimise any unpredictable behaviour on the part of parishioners, the clergy would place such sculptures in a central area of worship, such as the presbytery housing the main altar.
