The buckle was recovered in Putnam, Ontario, by Timmins Martelle Heritage Consultants Inc. It commemorates the 1862 International Exhibition, a world fair held in South Kensington, London, England from May to Novemeber. Thousands of objects were displayed, showcasing the latest technologies in art and manufacturing and ranging from household items such as clothing, jewelry, and stationary, to industrial machinery like locomotives and water pumps. Dozens of nations and colonies participated, and six million visitors attended. The buckle features the main exhibition building in the centre, with the opening day of May 1st, and a small globe in each corner representing the four cardinal points.
