Bessemer Converter, former Russell Works, Kelham Island, Sheffield

The former Russell Works is now part of Kelham Island Industrial Museum. The works was a crucible furnace built in around 1860 for the manufacture of steel and used in the production of saws, files and edge tools. This photograph includes photographer John Kippin standing in front of a Bessemer Converter, one of only three surviving in the world.
