In fall 1937, Lamar Dodd joined the University of Georgia's art department, serving as its chair from 1938 to 1973 and retiring in 1975; the art school was named after him in 1996. Dodd, best known for his paintings like this one of students on the university’s campus, arrived with the support of prominent patrons, and Hugh Hodgson’s invitation to him included the promise that the university would drastically increase the visual arts budget. Dodd brought new ambitions for the art department and began building a roster of faculty of his choosing.
