He presents the inner image, not the actual image as it is, in his painting. It is the image which is reflected by one’s mind. Lee made a note that his subject is ‘The Moon in Our Mind.’ The moonlight is a natural phenomenon and simultaneously it is beyond the phenomenon. The image expresses the feeling through the eye of the mind. We wonder where his next artistic destination is, which started from the human face and went on to the bamboo tree, apricot tree, a pine tree, and the waterfall.

  • Critic's Note: The Light of the Night He has been painting the night for a long time ago. He opened a number of charcoal boxes and withdraws lights to cast a shadow of the jet-black night on the canvas. He is in the middle of the night every day. He takes a walk tracing the thread of cotton cloth and canvas to find the center of deep sleep, one’s dark inside, vertiginous abyss, and the other face of unknown streets. Then, there is the light of the night. After everything disappeared, he can finally meet the light. What he is drawing is the moonlight which shows up after everything-the mountain, field, tree, and flower- has vanished. The Moonlight. The moon is the oldest mirror in human history. It is the true nature of longing and the face of the rear. The moon is also the rustic lover and the first love, which faded away with age. Lee is trying to capture the moonlight because of the nostalgic feeling. While people of modern day try to reach to the very center of desire by digging in the material of the present, Lee focuses on the fading night and the history of darkness. The audience is caught up in the history of the night when we stand in front of the Lee’s work. Lee, Jae Sam, the recluse of moonlight or the master of darkness. He is like Ezra Pound, the poet who worked and lived at the end of a century. The apparition of these faces in the crowd; Petals on a wet, black bough.
