Bharata with Rama's Sandals

This is the unique image of Bharata standing on a double lotus pedestal mounted on a rectangular base, with hooks on the four sides for carrying it in ritualistic processions. His hands, bent at elbows are raised high in the attitude of supporting the sandals, which are placed on a cushion, on his head. He wears a necklace, thin bracelets and sacred-thread. The lower garment is secured at the waist with an ornamental floral clasp with ribbon end on sides, all arranged artistically. The upbraided matted locks of hair are descending at the back in a loose fashion. This is the unique representation of this deity, carved with great feeling and emotion.

The image fully reflects the unparalleled devotion of Bharata, the prince of Ayodhya, for his elder brother Rama who was the heir apparent but was exited by palace intrigue as recounted in the Ramayarna. Bharata has been shown carrying sandals of the elder brother on his head as a mark of utmost devotion and respect for his elder brother Rama.
