Lord Ram is returning, triumphant, to Ayodhya after fourteen years in exile. Hanuman flies ahead to inform Bharatha who, overjoyed, leaves at once for Nandigrama, a village on the outskirts of Ayodhya, to receive his brother. Bharatha carries Lord Ram’s wooden sandals or padukas, the royal white umbrella and a fly whisk. Varma invests this picture with other trappings of royalty – a throne and sword – to affirm Bharatha’s glad handing of the reins of kingship back to his brother, as much as is shown by his welcoming embrace.
