In 1976, the Official Census of Brazil (IBGE) asked the question "What is your color?" resulting in 136 terms with symbolic and cultural meanings.
Varejão created her own oil paints, named after 33 definitions of skin color from the survey. The artist chose some of the most interesting and poetic terms, such as "Buffed", "Sun Kissed", "Snow White", and "Steady Color".
Inspired by paintings of New Spain's casta systems from the 17th and 18th centuries, Polvo shows the subjectivity of skin color and the concept of race, exposing the social aspect of racism.
