Big Whale is a work by the Asian American artist Mu Pan (Taichung City, Taiwan, 1976). The monkeys and the sea play a key role in his work. For him, monkeys represent human nature in its rawest form, without filters, and he often endows them with human features. The sea is a recurring backdrop in Mu Pan’s work, the scene of numerous battles. Mu Pan has made the mixture of cultures his personal brand, presenting in his works multiple narrative layers, personal reflections on human behaviour where humour and violence often come together.
