Used shipping containers symbolize the journeys of products traded in our modern day global exchange. Xiu-Zhen Yin brings attention to the relationships between international groups of people by re-working this container. The structure was transformed into a would-be 6,500,000 carat signature round cut diamond, a form symbolizing of desire, perfection and luxury. Like the shining facets of a diamond, rainbow light emanates from within the sculpture.
Yin is interested in the concept of black holes, which are regions of space from which nothing, including light, can escape. Thus, Black Hole is both a symbol of the world’s desire to progress and to consume resources, and is a reminder of the long-term cost to the environment that results from the fulfillment of this desire.
