This protest flyer against Columbia University was for one of a number of demonstrations held in April of 1968 to protest the university’s ties to the Vietnam War, as well as perceived segregationist aspects of the construction of a gymnasium by the school in Morningside Park, which linked the campus and the Harlem area of New York City. The protests entailed occupations of campus buildings by members of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the Student Afro Society (SAS); however, divisions and disputes between the two organizations fell largely along racial lines with SDS largely protesting the war and SAS protesting the “Gym Crow” policies of Columbia’s interaction with Harlem residents.
