Berlin, Germany

After the victory over France, the proclamation of the Prussian King William I to be the German Emperor took place in Versailles on 18 January 1871. During the ceremony, and almost two months later, this flag was on display on the Palace of Versailles. A grandson of General von Bose transferred the memento to the Berlin Arsenal in 1897. After 1945, the flag went from the American Central Collecting Point Wiesbaden to the West German administration and in 1965 to the Wehrgeschichtliche Museum Rastatt. The latter returned the flag as armory stock to the Deutsches Historisches Museum in 2002.
