As the first President of the United States, George Washington set many social standards that would be followed by later administrations. He and Mrs. Washington established times for public visits and more formal affairs. Those invited to dine at the executive residence received engraved invitations. Their simple, yet elegant, design could be customized with the recipient's name, date, and time.
