Star Trek is an American space opera media franchise based on the 1966 television series created by Gene Roddenberry. The show is set in the Milky Way galaxy, roughly during the 2260s. The ship and crew are led by Captain James T. Kirk, First Officer and Science Officer Spock, and Chief Medical Officer Leonard McCoy. The purpose of the starship was stated at the beginning of each episode: "Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before." Although the initial series only ran for three series, it gained a cult following and spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs.
