In 2013, the typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines, caused the death of about 10 000 people, as well as very heavy destruction. Tacloban City was hit very hard, with at least 6200 victims. The country, which consists of 7017 islands inhabited by over 107 million people, was particularly vulnerable. Despite rapid economic growth in recent years, 28% of the population still lives on less than $0.62 a day.
