Bonnet

1840/1860

Hungarian National Museum

Hungarian National Museum
Budapest, Hungary

The sleeping bonnet made of three pieces is decorated with thin machine-made lace at its cuts. The image of a couple of doves holding an emperor’s crown above a flower has been embroidered five times on the soft lawn base. The birds and flowers were made sculpturesquely, like an application.
This very personal accessory, maybe even worn post-partum, was a gift by Queen Elisabeth to her governess Mrs Henrik Spindler, Emma Mendelényi.
