The name of this building indicates that it is the place where the owner of this residence kept his collection of books. The collections were stored on the second floor to avoid humidity. The couplet inscribed on the pair of pillars in front of the main entrance of the building reads “(wish you) have the integrity of orchid and modesty of bamboo, and find happiness and pleasure in waters and mountains”, conveying the garden owner’s best wishes that his offspring would have not only the noble characters of bamboo and orchid, but also a successful career.
