In the 1880s, mule teams were needed to haul borax from remote mines in Death Valley, California to railroad stations for shipment. Borax compounds were used in a variety of products, from detergents to cosmetics and enamel glazes. Some of these mule teams used Studebaker wagons, which lead to the name "20 Mule Team Borax."
