This thicket is formed by a double row of ornamental shrubs that frame a north-south axis between the two exedrae. The density of this planting also screens the traffic on Lincoln Memorial Drive from the activity space in the meadow. Ironwood trees are trained over metal arches forming a woodsy tunnel. To achieve the tunnel effect in a short amount of time, fast-growing grapevines were initially planted and pruned in order to facilitate the growth of the ironwood trees.
