Northampton Station was a stop on Boston?s Main Line Elevated Line that ran on a steel structure above Washington Street. Unlike most of the stops on Washington Street, the stairs to/from the station ended on a safety island in the middle of the street. All fares were collected inside the station. Behind the station was the one platform served trains running in both directions that ran the full length of the longest trains on the line. Both the floor of the station and the platform outside were at the same level as the floor of the cars Underneath the station building is a portion of the steel structure that once supported he station building and also the elevated tracks that ran on either side of the building. This building was built in 1901 and served until 1987, and was acquired by the Museum when the elevated structure was taken down in 1988.
