Vic Tantau Balsa "Pig" Surfboard bottom view

Vic Tantau was a Torquay surf lifesaver and surfer in the 1950s who was among the first to surf at Bells Beach, became a pioneer Victorian surfboard manufacturer, an instigator of the Bells Beach Easter Rally in 1962 and a driving force behind the Australian National Surfing Museum being established in Torquay. One of the first to make balsa-cored fibreglass surfboards for Victorian surfers in the late '50s out of a factory in the Melbourne suburb of Moorabbin, this is a Tantau balsa "Pig" design (developed by Californian shaper Dale Velzy). It is an unusual shape that features reduced nose area and a wider tail than typical boards of the era.
