Made in the Central Chinese Province of Henan, Jun ceramics are distinctive for their simple forms, ideal for giving prominence to the brilliantly colored glazes. The luminous turquoise-blue was attained by adding glass to the celadon glaze, the purple “spot” by a brushstroke with copper color. This swift stroke of the brush and different firing conditions yield an “intended randomness”, which has a long tradition in Chinese utilitarian ceramics, but is given special significance here owing to the luminous color contrast in this ceramic work.
