Brandy Fredrickson (née Robinson) was born in Drayton Valley, Alberta, on December 12, 1984. Fredrickson’s great-great grandparents, Sam and Naoma Hooks (née Atkins), moved with their four children from Sharpes, Oklahoma, to Keystone, Alberta, in 1911. Through family, Fredrickson has connections to Breton (formerly Keystone), Wildwood (formerly Junkins), and Amber Valley (formerly Pine Creek)—three of the five former Black communities in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
