This tournament was meant to herald the arrival of the modern Brazil on teh world stage, but in the final Brazil lost against Uruguay 2-1 in front of the largest crowd ever assembled at a World Cup at the Maracana Stadium.

The Uruguayan captain 'The Black Chief' Obdulio Varela was handed the Jules Rimet Trophy by the shell shocked Jules Rimet himself. The entire nation collapsed in to silence.
