The majestic bronze portal of the main façade of the Duomo of Lecce was commissioned by archbishop Cosmo Francesco Ruppi (1988-2009), on the occasion of the Jubelee of 2000, and made by the sculptor Armando Marrocco, born in Galatina in 1939.
On the upper, fixed part, Jesus Christ is depicted risen and glorious, Lord of time - represented by the sun on the left - and history - represented by the moon on the right.
On the doors, from the top to the bottom, there is: the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (on the left); the martyrdom of the Saint Patrons (on the right); the embrace of Pope John Paul II - who was in Lecce for an Apostolic Visit on September 17th and 18th, 1994 - and the archbishop Ruppi, with the Bell Tower of the Duomo behind them (on the left); the Basilica of Saint Peter (on the right); the people of God on pilgrimage.
