Brush and Mirror Set

Migration Museum

Migration Museum
Adelaide, Australia

Brush and mirror set comprised of three parts: oval shape mirror with handle, rectangular bristle brush, and oval bristle brush. The oval brush has the words ‘Warranted bristle & horn, made in Japan’ imprinted on.
The brush and mirror set is of significance due to its associations with the experiences of migrants living in government hostels, with the official sponsorship of migrant hostels and migration schemes, and with the interpretation of these experiences in a museum setting.

  • Title: Brush and Mirror Set
  • Provenance: This brush set was originally used by migrants in the Pennington Migrant Hostel in Adelaide during the 1960s, and was then passed to the Migration Museum by the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs. For many years the set was part of the very popular Nissen Hut Gallery display, which recreated a room in temporary migrant accommodations. These brushes are probably for men’s use, and the oval brush style is known as a military brush.
