There was a lot of hope placed in BTX. Predictions made in 1980 stated that by 1985, one million people would be using this system. In order to achieve this goal, the Bundespost invested large sums in advertising measures. In 1984, the advertising budget proposal submitted was for 5 million Deutschmarks. However, not even this huge financial commitment seemed to help: the number of users did not come even close to the predicted one million. In 1988, there were only 150,000 BTX subscribers.
