Jeokdae is a turret erected on each bastion on both sides of a fortress gate. Joekdaes were installed only at the Janganmun (North Gate) and Paldalmun (South Gate) of the four main gates of Hwaseong Fortress. The one on the west of Janganmun is as tall as the fortress wall. The three vertical loopholes on the lower side of the bastion were made to allow troops to observe and fire at an approaching enemy. Each section of the wall had a loophole for firing arrows at enemy troops.
