This bust of Marie Antoinette was made by the royal porcelain manufactory at Sèvres, probably on the basis of a model created by the then head of the manufactory, the sculptor Louis Simon Boizot. It is the first portrait of Marie Antoinette as queen of France. She commissioned the bust in 1775 and had it sent to Vienna as a New Year’s gift to her mother, Maria Theresa.
